Riverside celebrated Mrs. Rushing's retirement today. We are sad to see her leave us but happy she's able to start a new chapter in her life. She has truly been the best principal EVER!!
MIMS students had A.J. Drake from Historic Bath, a site of the DNCR(Dept of Natural and Cultural Resources) come and speak with them about piracy. Students learned about piracy around the world, and local piracy.
This presentation was part of their prep for their Ocracoke field trip which will focus on Blackbeard 🏴☠️
MIMS students had the opportunity to attend a Ken Burns Q & A and have an early screening of his new documentary, The American Revolution. Students were able to hear from Ken Burns directly about the importance of keeping history alive for younger generations.
Students took advantage of being in Raleigh. They explored the Governors Mansion, the Legislative Building, a visit to the new Freedom Park, and the NC Capital.
Ms. Deaton's seventh grade science classes used Jenga blocks to prove Newtons 1st law. They slid a single block at a tower of five blocks and tried to dislodge the bottom block without toppling the tower. Some were able to prove the law of Inertia while others weren't so lucky.
Ms. Deaton's seventh grade science classes spent time on Friday proving Newton's Laws of Motion. They took turns hitting a tennis ball, ping pong ball and golf ball to see which object went the furthest when struck with the same amount of force. Newton's 1st law says that an object in motion will stay in motion, Newton's 2nd law says that the more force you use to strike an object the further it will go. Newton's 3rd law says that for every action there's an equal and opposite reaction. They proved all of these laws with the tennis ball, ping pong ball, and golf ball.

Tank warfare in the hallway? YES!
7th grade social studies students wrapped up their World War II unit with an exciting project. Students designed a tank that was then "driven" by a sphero robot. What fun!!
Underwater archaeology in middle school? We think so!
MIMS students spent Monday morning exploring the artifacts from Queen Anne's Revenge, Blackbeard's pirate ship. Students were given a behind the scenes tour of the artifacts and the scientific process that goes into their restoration.

Students are hard at work in and out of the classroom in the CTE Agriculture and Natural Resources program. Pruning, weeding, and fertilizing are some of the skills gained by working in the campus garden. We provide options for all students.
