Martin County Schools is proud to see our 2nd & 7 reading program recognized in the first-ever edition of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗖 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰—a new statewide newsletter from NCDPI’s Office of Athletics highlighting the power of education-based athletics across North Carolina. And here’s something special: Martin County Schools is home to the ONLY high school–led 2nd & 7 program in North Carolina.
Now in its fifth year in MCS, the program brings Martin County High School student-athletes into second-grade classrooms across the district each month to share the joy of reading. They read and discuss the books with younger students, lead students in taking the reading pledge from the book, and spend time making new friends.
During every visit, our young readers receive their own copy of a book from The Hog Mollie series, stories filled with meaningful lessons about character, perseverance, and making good choices.
By the end of the school year, our second graders have built their own personal library of books to keep—but the impact goes far beyond the pages.
✨ Second graders gain confidence and excitement about reading.
✨ High school athletes become mentors and role models.
✨ Real relationships form between two generations of students.
And sometimes, something even bigger happens—some of those student-athletes begin to imagine themselves becoming teachers one day.
This incredible program is made possible locally thanks to “Coach” Asim McGill, MCS Student Services Coordinator, who introduced 2nd & 7 to Martin County Schools and continues to be the driving force behind its success.
Programs like this remind us that in Martin County Schools, learning happens in powerful ways—across classrooms, across grade levels, and across our entire community.
