MCS Adds Tennis to Middle School Sports Roster

The opportunities are beginning earlier than ever before for the students of Martin County Schools. Beginning this fall, competitive tennis will start in middle school.

"Adding a middle school tennis team is a huge step forward for Martin County Schools,” said Chase Conner, MCHS Volunteer Tennis Coach.

“Tennis is a lifelong sport that welcomes kids of all skill levels and athletic abilities, and this program will help develop players earlier, creating a strong feeder system for our high school teams—teams that have already seen great success in recent years,’ he added.”

“As we enter a new, more competitive conference in tennis, this addition keeps us on pace with other districts that already have middle school programs in place. What makes this even more special is that our tennis tradition here in Martin County is truly a ‘grow our own’ story—all of our coaches today came through the program as players themselves. This is about more than just wins; it’s about keeping the culture of Martin County tennis alive and thriving."

Martin Middle School Athletics conducted a test run with club tennis last year, in which students played against others within the district. The success of the experiment encouraged administrators to proceed with expanding the program.

“The expansion of tennis in Martin County Schools is about much more than sports,” said Dr. Michelle White, Superintendent of Martin County Schools. “It’s as much about challenging students to come out of their comfort zones, try something new, and expand their horizons. The discipline, teamwork, and resilience learned in group sports will make a positive lifelong impact on our students.”

Middle School Girls' tennis will compete in the fall, starting in 2025, and Boys' tennis will begin in the Spring of 2026.
