Teamwork Between Agencies Benefits Students

Local agencies have pulled together all in the name of safety and education. The beneficiaries of the efforts are a group of Martin County Schools students.

Thanks to a grant from the Governor’s Highway Commission and support from Safe Kids and The Riverbend Safe Kids Coalition, fourth-graders at E.J. Hayes Elementary School can ride their bikes safely this summer and with brand new bike helmets.

First, Capt. Stacey Pippin of Williamston Fire/Rescue/EMS facilitated a classroom bike safety class for all fourth graders students at the school - nearly 100 total - during their physical education class.

Pippen was excited to once again be a part of this longstanding tradition for Williamston Fire/Rescue/EMS which had been sidelined by COVID-19.

While seeking out opportunities, officers from the Williamston Police Department discovered available grant funding to purchase bicycle helmets and did just that. The departments met and together they are training the entire E.J. Hayes fourth grade to ride their bicycles safely.

Under the direction of Pippin and others from Williamston Fire/Rescue/EMS and Williamston Police Department, students donned their new helmets Monday and rode an indoor bicycle course to show what they had learned.  Riding will continue this week until all fourth graders have completed the course.
